Hunger comes in waves
Ghrelin rises at your usual meal times, then falls — whether you eat or not.
Key points
- The hunger hormone ghrelin is trained by your habits: it peaks when you usually eat and subsides on its own within about 20 minutes.
- In multi-day fasts, ghrelin actually decreases over time — most people report hunger is lowest on day 2–3.
- Water (especially sparkling), a pinch of salt, black coffee or tea, and a short walk all reliably blunt a hunger wave.
- Distraction works: hunger fades when your attention is elsewhere. Have a task ready for your usual meal time.
- True warning signs are different from hunger: dizziness, palpitations, confusion. Those mean eat — now.
