The psychology of sticking with it
Willpower is unreliable. Systems aren't.
Key points
- If-then plans (“If I crave snacks at 9pm, then I'll make tea and go for a walk”) double or triple the odds of following through.
- Streaks work because your brain hates breaking a chain — but define success as “fasted again after a miss”, not “never missed”.
- Tracking is intervention: people who self-monitor lose about twice as much weight as those who don't.
- Start embarrassingly small. Winning at 12 hours ten times builds more momentum than failing at 20 hours twice.
- Attach fasting to identity: “I'm someone who doesn't eat late” beats “I'm trying not to snack”.
- Tell someone. Public commitment and a bit of accountability roughly doubles goal completion.
