When not to fast & warning signs
Fasting is a tool. Used wrongly, tools hurt.
Key points
- Don't fast if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, underweight, or have a history of an eating disorder.
- If you take insulin, sulfonylureas, blood-pressure or heart medication, fasting can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar or pressure — get medical guidance first.
- Stop and eat if you experience dizziness, fainting, palpitations, confusion, severe weakness or persistent vomiting.
- Fasts over 72 hours should only be done under medical supervision. Repeated multi-day fasts need bloodwork.
- Fasting should never feel like punishment. If it triggers binge-restrict cycles, stop and speak to a professional.
